A McLaren Vale couple’s first visit to the Clare Valley ended in disaster last week, when their four wheel drive rolled and lodged in a tree on Quarry Road.
Only receiving minor injuries Emily Hill and Zak Francis could see the funny side of their predicament – and so could everyone else.
Their car, a Toyota 4Runner, had landed with its rear end hooked up on a tree stump, leaving the vehicle almost perpendicular.
“We’ve never seen anything like it,” officer in charge of Clare Police Steve Harding said.
Emily and Zac had spent 18 accident-free months travelling around Australia in the vehicle, which became their home.
“We just thought we’d come to Clare for the day for a drive. We stopped at Olssen’s and Knappstein wineries and had a lovely lunch in the bakery – the pies were awesome – and we’d bought a bottle of wine,” Emily said.
“But we hadn’t had much to drink at all – I don’t believe in drink driving.”
They were heading home with Emily at the wheel when they decided to enjoy a scenic drive and chose to turn left into Quarry Road, where the car failed to negotiate a bend and rolled.
“We think it rolled, but neither of us can remember, and I just closed my eyes,” Emily said.
“When it stopped we both climbed out of the driver’s door.”
The unusual resting place for the 4Runner attracted a small crowd and when Butch Bennett arrived with his crew there was a moment of head scratching as they tried to work out how to release the vehicle.
What came next was typical of what happens in a rural community. Simon Gogol from Quality Sheds was passing by with a crane truck and he offered to help. Within a few minutes the car was freed and winched onto the back of Butch’s trailer.
Zac and Emily were checked out at the hospital and stayed the night at a motel before friends organised to bring them and their vehicle home.
Police said they wouldn’t report the couple for the accident. “But I don’t think we’ll be visiting Clare again for a while,” Emily said.
